7th Annual STEMfest!® at The Works to be Largest Ever Connecting Industry, Education & Community

NEWARK, Ohio—The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology will host its 7th annual STEMfest!® Middle and High School competition on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19. As the museum’s flagship STEM program, this two-day event connects industry, education, and community. Admission to both days of STEMfest! at The Works is free and open to the public. During STEMfest!, teams of students from middle and high schools across central Ohio present their findings to the STEMfest! Problem Solving Challenge they chose to explore. STEMfest! 2017 will be the largest to date, with 318 students competing in 83 teams. During this community event, organizations utilizing STEM fields show guests how science, technology, engineering, and math are applied within their industry through fun hands-on activities that showcase each business, its impact on our community, and future career opportunities for students.

2017 Problem Solving Challenges include:

  • Architectural Engineering Challenge: Sponsored by Newark City Engineers Office, Central Ohio Technical College (COTC), and Ohio University Civil Engineering
  • 3D Technology Challenge: Sponsored by Anomatic.
  • Biofuels Challenge: Sponsored by Denison University of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Ohio Soybean Council.

Presentations are judged by a panel of industry professionals using a variety of pre-determined criteria to rate the team’s findings and presentation skills. Trophies are awarded to the first place middle and high school teams, and all STEMfest! participants are invited to apply for internship and scholarship opportunities at various businesses and educational institutions associated with STEMfest! at The Works.
