Free Tax Preparation By AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Volunteers

Through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, clients can receive free tax preparation and free electronic filing of both Federal and Ohio returns. The tax refund can be a direct deposit and usually will be received within two to three weeks after filing.

The AARP tax counselors are certified by the IRS VITA/TCE program. Each counselor goes through training and testing to be qualified to prepare returns for clients. The counselors use a professional tax software program to assist clients and to file the returns. All counselors have agreed to a code of ethics and all tax preparation is done confidentially.

This service is provided free to all taxpayers in the Knox County area and beyond. Taxpayers with complex tax returns may be beyond the scope of the program; for example, depreciation of any property or a business with employees. Schedule F, farm income, is also out of scope; however, a retired farmer that has cash rental income from the land possibly could be in scope.

AARP Tax-Aide Foundation will be at the Public Library of Mt. Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry St., Mount Vernon, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. For an appointment, please call 740-392-2665 ext. 242. Counselors will also be in Danville at the Sanctuary on Monday, February 27 and March 27. For appointments in Danville, please call 740-599-7224.

Taxpayers should bring to the appointment last year’s return in addition to all current documents needed for tax preparation. This service is provided by volunteers and there is no cost to the client for the preparation and filing of the returns.
