Knox County Safety Council to Recognize Dedication to Safety in the Workplace

Knox County Safety Council will hold their annual awards breakfast Wednesday, April 19th at the Glenn A. Gallagher Centre at 7:30am.  The event includes a special guest speaker, scholarship presentations and award recognition.
This year’s guest speaker is Brad Hurtig.  Brad grew up as a typical student-athlete in a small town in Northwest Ohio. Only days after finishing his sophomore year of high school, a devastating workplace related accident resulted in the amputation of both of Brad’s hands. Through hard work and determination, Brad soon rejoined his high school football team.  His senior year, Brad led his team with 111 tackles and earned all-state honors – all while playing with no hands. Now Brad is taking his powerful message of workplace safety to businesses and organizations across the country.
A partnership with Shannon Staffing provided the opportunity to award $5000 in scholarships to two high school students entering secondary education.  The students were required to submit grade transcripts, a letter of recommendation and a 500-word persuasive essay on workplace safety & health as it pertains to their chosen field of study. Each of the following students will receive a $2500 scholarship.
Kenneth Harvey, Centerburg High School
Kenneth will be attending The Ohio State University with a major in Mechanical Engineering.

Holly McClay, Fredericktown High School
Holly will be attending Otterbein University with a major in Early Childhood Education.

The Safety Awards are presented in four categories; 100% Award, Group Award, Achievement Award, and Special Award.  These awards are determined by the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. The following local businesses will be recognized for their dedication to safety in the workplace:
